This message was given by Bishop Walkowiak following the Palm Sunday Mass to the Church in the Diocese of Grand Rapids encouraging us to live with intensity through these days. Our Bishop did not want to miss the opportunity to address the Spanish-speaking community by giving a message of encouragement and hope that continues to be relevant in this Easter season.

Mis queridos feligreses,
Hoy Domingo de Ramos comenzamos la Semana Santa, la semana grande de nuestra tradición católica. Nadie se imaginó, yo tampoco, que tendrías una Semana Santa con los templos vacíos por la cuarentena del corona virus. Los templos están vacíos pero la Iglesia sigue viva y fuerte porque la Iglesia son ustedes que tienen a Dios presente y viven el espíritu de la Semana Santa desde sus hogares desde su Iglesia doméstica. Así como Dios no abandono a su Hijo en su sufrimiento y lo resucito, nos colmará de fortaleza en estos tiempos de crisis e incertidumbre. Los animo hoy para que en este tiempo de pausa y reflexión crezca también el amor y la comprensión en sus hogares y para que acompañando a Jesús en el camino de la cruz en esta Semana Santa se fortalezca su vida espiritual. Agradezco a los trabajadores de la salud y a todas las personas que de una u otra manera están trabajando y haciendo hasta lo imposible para salvar vidas.
Cuenten con mis oraciones y confíen en el Señor de la Vida que esta con ustedes su pueblo santo. Les recomiendo que esta Semana Santa lean y mediten juntos en familia la Pasión de Jesús. Que Dios los bendiga a todos.

My dear parishioners,
Today, Palm Sunday, we begin Holy Week, the great week of our Catholic tradition. No one imagined, myself included, that we would have a Holy Week with empty churches due to the coronavirus quarantine in place. The church buildings may be empty but the Church is still alive and strong because the Church is you, who have God present and alive the spirit of Holy Week from our homes, from the domestic Church. Just as God did not abandon his Son in his suffering and resurrected him, He will fill us with strength in these times of crisis and uncertainty. Today, I encourage you that in this time of pause and reflection, love and understanding also may grow in your homes and that by accompanying Jesus on the Way of the Cross during Holy Week, your spiritual life may be strengthened. I thank health workers and all people who are, one way or another, working and doing everything possible to save lives.
