On Feb. 25, the Senate failed to advance the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act—legislation that prohibits infanticide by ensuring that a child born alive following an abortion would receive the same degree of care to preserve her life and health as would be given to any other child born alive at the same gestational age. The Senate rejected a motion to advance the bill on a vote of 53 to 44 with 3 not voting.

In a letter to Catholics of the Diocese of Grand Rapids in January, Bishop Walkowiak condemned the passage of New York’s “Reproductive Health Act,” signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo on Jan. 22, 2019, the 46th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision. Following the release of Bishop Walkowiak’s letter, the U.S. Bishops, through their committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued a statement in response to several states moving forward with legislation that would permit a baby to be aborted at nine months.
