The Diocese of Grand Rapids’ Office of Communications issues the following statement from Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak, bishop of Grand Rapids, in response to the shooting at Michigan State University:

This morning brings news of yet another shooting. These acts of senseless violence have become all too commonplace in our society. Many in West Michigan have ties to Michigan State University. This tragedy strikes close to home.

We pray for those who are critically wounded, that they may yet recover. We ask the Lord to grant eternal rest to those who have died. We pray in a special way for the victims’ families and friends, and anyone who witnessed this incident.

On this Valentine’s Day, we remember the Lord‘s commandment to “love one another as I have loved you.” We must start, here and now, to root out such evil in our society.

We join with Bishop Boyea and the people of the Diocese of Lansing in prayer for everyone affected by this tragedy.
