Exaltation of the Cross Centennial Extraordinaire

September 14 @ 3:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Join St. Charles Parish in Greenville to celebrate religious freedom. Bishop Walkowiak will preside at the Mass on this evening.

Background: The square block where St. Charles’ 3rd church building now stands was the site of the church and girls boarding school in 1924 when the cross outside was burned by the Ku Klux Clan. The church’s current sign and large steel cross mark the site of the cross burning, intentionally.

September 14, the Exaltation of the Cross, is meant to be a celebration of religious freedom.  In spite of persecution, disaster or threat, we are still standing strong. History is worth remembering and noting in hopes that we learn lessons for the future. The evening’s event will include a video of area folks recounting either their personal experiences with religious persecution or stories told to them.  Attendees will be able to visit ‘presentation stations’ with more stories and history and good food will be served.

3 p.m. Family activities
4 p.m. Prayer service at the cross, gather at the corner of Benton and Lafayette.
4:20 p.m. Procession with the relic of the True Cross
5 p.m. Mass with Bishop Walkowiak presiding followed by adoration
6 p.m. Grilled dinner, bake sale and Presentation Stations
