Thank you for your generous response to aid victims of Hurricanes Eta and Iota in December both online and in our parishes. The diocese received $14,794.50 from 20 parishes and has directed those funds to Catholic Relief Services to provide lifesaving assistance.
The impact in Central America of back-to-back Hurricanes Eta and Iota has caused widespread devastation and loss. Hardest hit have been Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico. People who were already living in poverty are now facing the damaging aftermath of powerful winds, flash floods, river overflows, and landslides.
Our diocese is home to a significant number of people from Guatemala. Moreover, many people living in these countries are already subject to dangerous conditions due to violence, insecurity and lack of economic opportunities, making recovery from these natural disasters even more burdensome.
To aid victims of these natural disasters, Bishop Walkowiak asked for a special collection in the parishes of our diocese the weekend of Dec. 5/6. Funds collected were directed to Catholic Relief Services.
