The Office of Communications releases the following statement on comments made by Pope Francis regarding civil unions in the new documentary, “Francesco”:

Pope Francis’ remarks in the new documentary, “Francesco” do not alter Church teaching.

The Catholic Church believes and teaches that men and women who experience same-sex attraction “must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 2358)

We await official comment from the Vatican, which we hope will provide fuller context for the Holy Father’s remarks.
