DESCRIPTION:Description: \nIn her poem “Hope is the Thing with Feathers\,” Emily Dickinson described hope as a little bird that sings and never stops in the midst of the storm.  It’s a lovely image\, but hope is hard work.  It shows its face most prominently in the suffering of the world.  How are we as pilgrims called to embody hope in our day and age? \nBiography: \nSister Megan McElroy has been a Dominican Sister of Grand Rapids since 1988. She ministered for a total of thirteen years as a pastoral associate. Her first assignment took her to the cradle of the community in Traverse City where she ministered at St. Patrick Parish and lived at St. Francis Convent. After four years in the northern lower peninsula\, she returned to her home Archdiocese of Detroit where she ministered for nine years at St. Blase Catholic Community in Sterling Heights. After earning her Master of Divinity from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago\, Megan taught theology at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart\, an all-girls Catholic high school in the north shore area of Chicago. \nShe was then called to eight years of formation ministry as co-director of the Collaborative Dominican Novitiate in St. Louis\, Missouri\, forming novices who come together to create their own experience in community with fresh spirit\, abundant gifts\, and eagerness to grow in the Dominican tradition. DESCRIPTION:Description: \nThe Church emerged from Vatican Council II with a self-understanding that equipped Her to engage the world with the transcendent hope that comes from the Paschal Mystery. This presentation will explore those factors that Catholics need to continue to believe and practice as faithful disciples and noble citizens of the world. \nBiography: \nFr. Robert J. Keller\, O.P. is a Dominican priest of the Province of St. Albert the Great USA\, located in the Midwest. Born February 7\, 1952\, the eldest of three children of John and Charlotte Keller\, he grew up in northwest Minnesota. Educated by Benedictine Sisters\, he attended St. John University of Collegeville for two years before transferring to NDSU\, Fargo\, ND to complete a degree in pharmacy in 1975. He worked for two years as a pharmacist. During the second year\, he encountered Dominican friars at the University of Minnesota Newman Center\, and asked to join the Order. He did his novitiate in Denver 1977-1978 where he made First Profession on August 28\, 1978. He studied philosophy and theology at the Aquinas Institute of Theology in Dubuque\, IA\, which moved to St. Louis\, MO in 1981. He completed his M.A. and M.Div\, and was ordained to the priesthood on May 9\, 1983. He served at Holy Rosary Parish\, Minneapolis\, MN for 4 years\, then obtained his Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union\, Berkeley\, CA in 1993 in the Sociology of Religion\, studying under John A. Coleman\, S.J.\, Claire Fischer\, and the sociologist Robert Bellah. \n \nFr. Keller taught for one year at Aquinas Institute\, after which he served at Emory University Catholic campus ministry for two years\, and taught a class there\, then as pastor of the Aquinas Newman Center at UNM\, Albuquerque from 1995-2005. He then served as pastor of the St. Paul Catholic Center at Indiana University from 2005-2011. He was selected to be novice master for the Province and served in Denver\, CO from 2011-2020. DESCRIPTION:In June 2019\, Pope Francis declared 2020 the Jubilee Year for Air travelers and Pilgrims to Shrine of Loreto. Our Lady of Loreto was named the patron saint of aviation and aviators by Pope Benedict XV in 1920. The Jubilee Year will start on December 8\, 2019\, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and conclude on December 10th\, 2021 the feast of Our Lady of Loreto. According to pious tradition\, Mary’s house in Nazareth was flown by angels to Loreto\, Italy in 1294\, after a stop in Croatia\, what was then Yugoslavia. This miracle is often referred to as “the Miracle of the Holy House of Loreto”. \nTake in Rome (with its iconic sites\, fountains\, and four Major Basilicas)\, and attend the Papal Audience with the Holy Father. Walk in the footsteps of St. Padre Pio and St. Francis of Assisi. Not to mention time to view the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano. From Assisi\, you will make your way to Florence – recognized as the “Cradle of the Renaissance”. Visit the marvelous Churches\, buildings\, and museums that make it so unique\, as well as the historical relics and artistic masterpieces by the greatest masters! And to finish with Venice – the “City Paved in Water”\, famous for its Basilica\, palazzi\, ancient bridges\, monuments\, and piazzas!

SUMMARY:"The Hope of Integral Ecology"
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nWhat is integral ecology\, and how can it bring about hope in troubled times? What can it offer to Catholics and to all people of good will? Integral ecology\, introduced by Pope Francis in his environmental encyclical Laudato Si’\, is a call to look holistically at the ecology of our common home and how best to care for it so that both natural and human ecology benefit. In a world in which there is so much dissonance in the voice of creation\, integral ecology can be a beacon for hope and praise. In this lecture\, Sister Damien Marie Savino\, a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist and former Dean of Science and Sustainability at Aquinas College\, will discuss her research on the principles and practices of integral ecology. This is the topic of her new book\, to be published in 2025\, and the focus of her current appointment as the Melchor Visiting Professor in the School of Engineering at University of Notre Dame\, with a concurrent appointment at the McGrath Institute for Church Life. \nBiography: \nSr. Damien Marie Savino is a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist and served as the Dean of Science and Sustainability at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. Her research interests include theology and science\, ecology and theology\, ecological restoration\, and resilience theory.\n \nHer scientific research focuses on environmental remediation of soil and groundwater contamination\, the environmental impacts of endocrine-disrupting chemicals\, and the application of resilience theory to ecosystem health. For the past ten years\, she has become increasingly involved in interdisciplinary projects and has lectured and written widely on Laudato Si’ and integral ecology\, as well as on science and faith\, ecology and theology\, and ecological restoration and health. \nSavino’s Kellogg project “Educating for Laudato Si’: Engineering for Integral Ecology” is a book she is writing to address the urgent need to put into practice integral ecology as envisioned by Pope Francis in his environmental encyclical Laudato Si’\, in conversation with the broader literature and practice of integral human development. DESCRIPTION:Description: \nMary of the journey and on a journey can be found from the Gospel of Luke through the final document of the Synod for a Synodal Church. Key points of this journey will be presented along with themes and questions of the future of Marian studies. \nBIO: \nNeomi De Anda\, serves as the Executive Director for the International Marian Research Institute. She is also a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Dayton Department of Religious Studies. She teaches courses in religion\, languages and cultures\, Latinx and Latin American studies\, race and ethnic studies\, and women and gender studies. She is a  Marianist Educational Associate and a Human Rights Center Research Associate. Dr. De Anda is a Catholic Lay Marianist and part of the Micah Theotokos Marianist Lay Community. Since its inception on Easter 2020\, Dr. De Anda has worshiped with the online community of the Holy 42. \nDr. De Anda holds a Ph.D. in Constructive Theology from Loyola University Chicago.  She also has master’s degrees in Theology (Oblate School of Theology) and Educational Leadership (St. Mary’s University). Dr. De Anda has scholarly presentations\, publications and exhibitions on her research interests of Mary and breast milk; chisme; LatinoXa Christology; migrations in conjunction with the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative Immigrant Justice Team. She maintains a commitment to a border theology at the intersections of the environment\, migrations\, labor\, and women because of her roots in El Paso\, Texas.  Dr. De Anda hosts the Chisme Symposium at the University of Dayton. During this coming holy year\, we invite your participation in the following diocesan events. May the Holy Spirit sustain and invigorate our lives so we can be pilgrims of hope for one another!  \nPilgrimages: “Pilgrimage is of course a fundamental element of every jubilee event. Setting out on a journey is traditionally associated with our human quest for meaning in life. In the coming year\, pilgrims of hope will surely travel the ancient and more modern routes in order to experience the Jubilee to the full.”\n(Spes non confundit\, 5) \nPilgrimage to the Cathedral of Saint Andrew –\n301 Sheldon Blvd. SE\, Grand Rapids\nThe pilgrimage will start at 3 p.m. with Mass. A reception will follow at Cathedral Square Center.  \nDec. 28\, 2025 – Conclusion of the Jubilee Year
