The Diocese of Grand Rapids’ Office of Communications issues the following statement from Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak, bishop of Grand Rapids:

“Together with the clergy and Catholics throughout the Diocese of Grand Rapids, I offer congratulations to the faithful of the Archdiocese of Detroit and a warm welcome home to Archbishop Paul Russell upon his appointment as auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Detroit. I look forward to collaborating with Archbishop Russell as he joins the Catholic Bishops of Michigan.

The Archdiocese of Detroit is one of the most ethnically diverse dioceses in the United States. Rich cultural traditions and practices play an important role in how people celebrate and live out their faith. Archbishop Russell’s years of service in the Vatican Diplomatic Corps will contribute greatly to his pastoral ministry in this vibrant region of Michigan.

I invite the people of West Michigan to join me in praying for Archbishop Russell as he prepares to begin his ministry in early July.”
